A635 Goldthorpe Bypass closure

Why is the Lockwood Road subway closed?

The Lockwood Road subway was closed because a car was deliberately set on fire. This resulted in significant structural damage to mainly the subway roof. There was a significant risk that the subway could collapse with the loading of the traffic on the A635 Dearne Valley Parkway. This meant that extensive structural assessments needed to be carried out to the subway.

We'll now be working with a contractor to undertake repairs to the damaged roof of the subway. This will mean a temporary closure in order for us to complete these works.

We'll keep the public informed about any updates.

Temporary closure of Dearne Valley Bypass

In order for us to complete repairs to the roof of the subway, a temporary road closure will be put in place. Dearne Valley Bypass will be closed from 3 June 2024 for around four months. This work will include:

  • Onsite traffic management.
  • Hydro demolition of the damaged roof slab to expose the reinforcement bars.
  • Fixing of new reinforcement steel.
  • A new concrete roof slab.
  • Reinstatement of the carriageway.

This timescale is subject to the extent of the damage revealed, once the concrete has been removed. Any further vandalism will also delay the completion of the work. This in turn will delay the opening of both the subway and the bypass.

How long will it take to repair the subway?

An extensive set of works is needed to repair the subway. Subject to no further work being needed and no vandalism, we expect the works will be mainly completed in September 2024.

As soon as the subway is safe, we'll reopen Dearne Valley Bypass.

When will the bypass be reopened?

We'll work to reopen the bypass as soon as all the repairs are complete on the subway and it's safe to do so.

Will the same diversion be in place when the bypass is closed again?

Once the bypass closes, the previous diversion route will be put in place.

The traffic heading towards Doncaster will be diverted onto Barrowfield Road and Lidget Lane. The traffic heading towards Barnsley will be diverted onto Doncaster Road and Barnsley Road through Goldthorpe town centre.
