Speed indicator devices (SIDs) are traffic management tools that display real-time speed limits. They promote safe driving behaviour, increase awareness of speed limits, and enhance road safety for all road users.
A SID gives a visual alert to road users of the speed limit in force on that road. They're a tool to help people develop a more balanced attitude and behaviour towards appropriate speeds for given environments.
How do SIDs help us to make Barnsley’s roads safer?
The primary objective of deploying SIDs is to reduce speeding, enhance compliance with speed limits, and improve overall road safety. By providing immediate feedback to drivers about their speed, SIDs aim to create a safer road environment. This in turn should reduce the likelihood of collisions.
SIDs don't record vehicle identify, so this data can’t be used for prosecution.
How does this link to our Barnsley’s Safer Roads Strategy
Barnsley’s Road Safety Strategy includes ‘safer speeds’ as one of the core pillars of the safer roads theme. The safer speeds pillar aims to ensure that:
- Our highway environment is self-explaining with appropriate (evidence led) speed limits. These reinforce appropriate road user behaviour, especially when this relates to the most vulnerable road users.
- Road users understand and travel at appropriate speeds with respect to road conditions and within speed limits. Where appropriate we'll work with our communities and partners, to investigate, educate and reinforce appropriate road user behaviour.
Deploying SIDs will assist in delivering both of these aims.
