The maximum fare charged by a licensed Barnsley hackney carriage vehicle is fixed by us.
To fix the schedule of fares a written request is submitted to us by the hackney carriage associations. The application must include details of the increase/decrease and provide supporting evidence. We'll then either grant, amend or refuse this.
We're obliged under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 to advertise any change to an approved table of fares. Any objections to the proposal must be looked at before a new fare is brought into force.
After a fare increase we make sure all licensed hackney carriages are checked. Hackney carriage vehicles with meters who are operating under the new tariff are checked and sealed. This is to make sure that members of the public aren't overcharged for their journey.
