Register or change your details for Council Tax

Registering for Council Tax (including first-time buyer/renters)

You'll need to register for Council Tax if:

  • You've moved from another area or from abroad and have purchased or rented a property in Barnsley.
  • You've purchased or rented your first property in Barnsley and you weren’t responsible for Council Tax at your previous address. This includes first time buyers/renters, for example, if you previously lived with your parents.

You'll need to complete the change of address form to register for Council Tax.

To complete this form, you'll need:

  • the address and the postcode of the address you are moving out of.
  • the address and the postcode of the property you're moving to.
  • the date you'll move out of your current property.
  • sale completion date and solicitor details (if buying).
  • tenancy start date and landlord or letting agent details (if renting).
  • your phone number or email address.
  • your bank details if you wish to pay your Council Tax by direct debit.

Change your details for Council Tax

A change in your circumstances can affect the amount of Council Tax you pay. You need to tell us about any changes so that we can make sure you’re paying the right amount.

Change your address

When you change your address, please tell us straight away so we can update your Council Tax account. This includes if you’re a Berneslai Homes or private rented tenant.

Moving to another property in the area

The change of address form should be used if:

  • you’re moving from one Barnsley address to another.
  • you’re responsible for Council Tax at a property within the Barnsley area.
  • you're a first-time buyer/renter/occupier

Moving into the area

The change of address form should be used if:

  • you’re moving into the Barnsley area from another area or from abroad.
  • you weren’t responsible for Council Tax at a previous address in Barnsley.

Moving out of the Barnsley area

The change of address form should be used if:

  • you’re moving out of the Barnsley area to another area or abroad.
  • you will no longer be responsible for Council Tax in the Barnsley area.

Moving into a new build property

If you've recently purchased or moved into a new build property, it may not be registered on our system or have a Council Tax valuation band assigned yet. Properties are banded by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) and confirmation will be sent when the property is banded.

You'll still need to complete the change of address form to register for Council Tax which will be processed, and the address added to our system. Once the property is banded, a bill will be issued and posted to the charge payer.

Tell us a tenant has moved in/out, or that you've bought/sold a property

If you’re a landlord or letting agent and your tenant changes address, let us know by filling in our change of tenant form.

You can also use this form to tell us if you are:

  • Buying a property in the Barnsley area but not to live in it. (You're purchasing a property for rental or investment purposes but will not move into it).
  • Selling a property that is not your main home/address. (You're selling a property where you were responsible for Council Tax, but it was not your main home or the address where you lived).
