Anti-social behaviour

Anti-social behaviour (ASB) is behaviour that causes harassment, alarm or distress to other people in your neighbourhood.

It can include anything that affects someone else's quality of life. Examples of this are:

  • playing music too loud
  • dumping rubbish
  • graffiti
  • threatening or swearing at neighbours
  • criminal damage
  • assault
  • racist or homophobic abuse

We have an anti-social behaviour policy to help to tackle this. Our policy includes:

  • our commitment to reducing anti-social behaviour
  • improving the quality of life for local people
  • reducing crime and the fear of crime in our communities

Report anti-social behaviour

You can report anti-social behaviour by:

  • filling in an online report
  • calling 01226 773555
  • calling 101 (the police non emergency number)
  • calling 999 in an emergency

Do you rent your home from Berneslai Homes? You can also report the problem to your housing officer or local safer neighbourhood team.

ASB case review

Many incidents of anti-social behaviour can be resolved by a single action by one agency. Sending a warning letter to the culprit may be all that's needed to stop the behaviour from happening again.

To resolve some cases, several agencies may need to work together.

If you feel that the anti-social behaviour you've reported hasn't been dealt with effectively, you can raise a ASB case review. This requests agencies like the council, police and housing providers to review their response to your report together.

The ASB case review doesn't replace each agency's own complaints procedure. If you're not satisfied with the conduct of an agency, you should still follow their complaints process.

When to raise a ASB case review

You can call us to ask us to raise a ASB case review on your behalf.  This can be done if you've reported three separate incidents of the same anti-social behaviour in the last six months.

You can also write to us at: Barnsley Council Community Safety and Enforcement Service, PO Box 634, Barnsley, S70 9GG.

We'll only use your personal details for the services we provide to you.
