Town square improvements are being made as part of our work to make Hoyland town centre a more attractive and welcoming place to shop and visit.
The £400,000 programme of works at Hoyland Town Square is being carried out by the Council’s in-house construction services team and includes:
- Repaving in the Town Square
- Installing new seating and lighting
- Landscaping works
- Painting canopies and street lighting
- Improvements to the facade of the former Co-op building
- Fitting power points and anchor points market stalls
Business owner Kate Jenkinson, of Yorkshire Coffee Roasters, said: “I am looking forward to seeing the works being completed for the public to enjoy.”
The works, which are expected to be finished by early Spring, are part of our Principal Towns and Local Centres programme.
We’ve invested significantly in Hoyland under this programme, making safety improvements to Duke Street car park, helping almost 70 businesses update their shopfronts and upgrading the town centre public realm.
The Council has also acquired the lease to the former Coop premises fronting the Town Square and is working with a potential tenant to bring the building back into public use.
Cllr Robin Franklin, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said: “We are confident this programme of works, which are a key part of our regeneration programme, will enhance the centre of Hoyland.
“They are refreshing and brightening up the Town Square, making it an inviting place to shop, work and visit, and increasing the vibrancy of Hoyland town centre, building upon the initial scheme delivered last year.
“This significant project highlights our ongoing commitment to investing in and improving our high streets and I look forward to seeing the results of our hard work.”
Under our Principal Towns and Local Centres programme, we’ve already put £5 million in improving our high streets and communities across Barnsley, with another £30 million planned over the next five years.
The programme aims to ensure our high streets are thriving and appealing places to visit and that everyone can benefit from a pleasant and safe shopping experience.
