We're hosting a pair of free What's Your Move festivals this August to help children and young people stay physically active during the summer holidays.
Taking place at Dorothy Hyman Sports Centre (10am-3pm) on Sunday 11 August and Thurnscoe Sports Ground (3pm-6pm) on Tuesday 20 August, the events will offer plenty of fun for all the family.
Arranged by Jolly Good Communities, the festival at Dorothy Hyman Sports Centre will include have-a-go stalls to provide an opportunity to try a variety of sports and activities for people of all ages and abilities, including table tennis, gymnastics, hockey and judo.
You'll be able to watch some African drumming and other group demonstrations and displays as part of the day's events, while an array of food from around the world will be available too.
The Thurnscoe event, organised by the Thurnscoe Regeneration CIO, will include a RampUP session in the multi-use games area with free bike checks also available as part of the Barnsley Bike Works offer.
The Barnsley FC Community Trust are bringing their Summer Sports Van with multi-sport activities, while Active Fusion will be on hand to help youngsters test their archery skills. Toilets and refreshments will be available on-site.
Councillor James Higginbottom, Cabinet spokesperson for Environment and Transport, said: "Being physically active is good for both your physical and mental health while helping you to move more, live well and feel better.
"We're proud to offer these free events during the summer holidays to keep people, particularly children and young people, active.
“I hope as many people as possible take advantage of this great opportunity. A big thank you to everyone involved with the organisation of such fabulous events."
Victoria Agnew of Jolly Good Communities added: "This has been an idea of ours for many years and, thanks to our funders and volunteers, we can finally get it out there for the people of Barnsley to enjoy.
“Our What’s Your Move festival will have a mix of sports and physical activity providers plus cultural music, dance, arts and crafts. You’ll be able to see some African drumming and have the chance to try food from around the world. There are activities for everyone from toddlers up to older people and some sports will be inclusive too.”
Alison Vint, Development Worker for Thurnscoe Regeneration CIO, said: "We're thrilled to support the What’s Your Move multi-sports day in Thurnscoe. We know it’s not always easy for families to get out and about during the summer holidays, so it was important for us to host something for free in the centre of Thurnscoe.
"We have some great facilities at the Sports Ground, including the Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), the Plaza and the sports field itself to host lots of exciting activities for everyone to try out and get active.
"We plan to make this an annual event so please come along and help us to get everyone moving!"
