The ongoing exceptionally cold temperatures and icy weather conditions are continuing to disrupt our services across Barnsley.
We would like to thank residents for their ongoing patience. With conditions set to last until at least Sunday, we would like to provide an update on affected services as well as our plans going forward.
Our winter service staff have now been on constant deployment since New Year’s Day assisting with flood warnings, gritting and clearing snow.
The primary gritting routes across the borough remain our focus, with secondary routes, which include some side streets and estate roads, being addressed as our resources allow.
Continuous gritting will continue until Sunday along primary routes with secondary routes whilst it remains at these sub-zero temperatures. Once temperatures begin to increase from Sunday, their attention will shift to supporting any potential local flooding issues that could result from the melting snow.
Our household waste collections were severely disrupted throughout the week due to the condition of side streets and footways, which made it difficult to ensure safe working conditions for our staff.
We continue to assess the local conditions and any bins that are missed will be collected next week.
The Neighbourhood Services team have been carrying out gritting and clearing snow from key locations of high footfall and around vulnerable people across the borough as part of our snow plan. They’re also assisting our household waste collection crews this week.
In Bereavement Services, cremations and burials are ongoing as normal but interments at the Crematorium are currently postponed due to the snow and ice on the ground.
Commercial waste, bin deliveries and bulky waste collections have all seen disruption, and any missed collections or deliveries will be completed next week.
Councillor James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said:
“I’d like to give my heartfelt thanks and gratitude all Barnsley Council teams who’ve supported the response to the severe weather.
“The snow and ice continues to be incredibly challenging for many of our core services and with the weather not set to improve until the very end of the week, our staff are continuing to work hard to deal with the conditions across the borough.
“We continue to make sure that our staff are working safely in these icy conditions, we don't want anyone to slip and become injured, and I’m grateful to all staff for their continued efforts.
“I would also like to thank residents for their patience through this challenging period of disruption. Our focus now is on catching up and safely returning services to normal as quickly as possible. We will continue to keep the alerts page on our website updated with any further information on disruption to services.”
