Supporting our apprentices to gain skills for life

We’re proud to support National Apprenticeship Week, a celebration of the values, benefits, and opportunities that apprenticeships bring. This year, the focus is on 'Skills for Life,' showing how apprenticeships can help you gain the skills and knowledge for a successful career.

At Barnsley Council, we are proud to have 101 active apprentices since April 2024, taking part in a diverse range of apprenticeship programmes, including business administration, social work, finance, environmental and driving apprenticeships.

Here's a glimpse of some of the testimonials we've received from our brilliant apprentices:

Natasha Marrow, Business Administration, said: “I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone wanting a restart in their career. It has opened my eyes to the opportunities available to me. After taking time out to have a family, an apprenticeship was the perfect opportunity for me to develop my skills in the workplace. I have thrown myself into every available project and opportunity, and I even received extra funding from Barnsley College to complete a Microsoft Office course. This apprenticeship has been the kick-start I needed to begin my career at the council.”

Jack Shaw, Digital Technician, said: “I really enjoyed my T-Level with Barnsley Council, and it gave me the opportunity to undertake an apprenticeship. Everyone is so friendly, and even though I was one of the youngest employees in a large organisation, no one ever treated me differently because of my age or position. There are many benefits to working at the council. For me, the best part is growing as a person, learning new skills, and enjoying going to work every day, which is very important for a young person."

Cllr Robert Frost, Cabinet Spokesperson for Core Services, said: “We’re proud of the positive impact that apprenticeships have had on our learners. We’re committed to helping everyone in Barnsley achieve their fullest learning potential. Apprenticeships provide an exciting opportunity to gain lifelong skills while earning a qualification, serving as a valuable pathway to work. They also offer our existing council employees the chance to advance in their careers.”
