Barnsley Council has been working with partners to improve flood resilience and support communities and residents across the borough.
Storm Babet caused significant rainfall which marked the wettest day on record since 1891.
Across Barnsley, we initiated a comprehensive response strategy which included proactive measures to safeguard communities.
Our Highways Team responded to over 100 requests, cleared culverts, deployed tankers and distributed sandbags at high risk areas.
Partners and Council services came together including Berneslai Homes, our contact centre, communities and safer neighbourhood teams.
Residents and communities who were affected have also been supported to help them recover.
Our flood prevention schemes
We’ve been working hard to reduce the impact of extreme weather in key areas of our borough.
We’re continuing to invest in areas including Lang Avenue and Low Valley Bulling Dyke. You can read more information on what we’ve done so far can be found on our website.
Our strong partnership working with key partners, including the Environment Agency, Connected by Water, Internal Drainage Boards, and Water Companies, have been instrumental in progressing these flood management initiatives.

“What we saw in October underscored the importance of proactive flood management.
“We’ve worked hard to protect and recover properties from damage and will continue to help residents to be prepared for future flood incidents.
"Through the Connected By Water plan we will continue to help secure investment to better protect communities, properties and residents across our borough.”
