Over 88 per cent of Barnsley children offered their top preference of secondary school for September

It’s National Offer Day, and parents across Barnsley are finding out which secondary school their children will be joining.

This year, we were delighted to offer 2,400 children (88.9 per cent) a place at their top preference for September 2025.

The proportion of children being offered their first preference is up on last year, reflecting our commitment to helping our young people get the best possible education.

Overall, we have been able to offer 2,656 children (98.3 per cent) a place at one of their preferred secondary schools, with:

  • 236 children (8.7 per cent) being offered a place at their second preference.
  • 20 children (0.7 per cent) being offered a place at their third preference.

We’re committed to making sure that no child or young person in Barnsley is left without a school offer. Our Admissions team has ensured that any child who did not get one of their preferred choices has been offered a place at the nearest available school ready for September.

Councillor Trevor Cave, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children’s Services, said: “We want every child and young person in Barnsley to dream big, excel in their education and achieve their full potential. I am therefore delighted to see so many children in our borough being offered a place at their first choice of secondary school for September.

“This would not be possible without the hard work of our Admissions team and secondary schools, making sure families have all the information they need to make an informed decision about what’s next for their child’s educational journey.

“I would like to thank them for everything they do to make the process simple for families and make sure no child in Barnsley is left without a school place for September.”

This year, the proportion of online applications was the highest we’ve seen since 2022/23, with our Virtual Family Hubs making the process easy for families.

Available all year round, this webpage offers a wide range of information to help parents and carers, from finding childcare to learning more about our Family Hubs and fun things to do.

We know that some children and families may have received disappointing news today, and we’re here to help you understand what to do next.

Our Admissions team are here to support any parents who may wish to appeal their offer with the right advice and guidance about the process. You can speak to the team by calling 01226 773677 or emailing admissions@barnsley.gov.uk.
