New wayfinding totems to boost visitor experience in Barnsley town centre

Barnsley Council is excited to announce the installation of new wayfinding totems throughout the town centre.

The development, which is due to be completed in October, will make it easier for residents and visitors to find their way around Barnsley’s bustling centre.

The totems will be placed at key locations such as County Way, Eldon Street, Market Street, and Market Hill and are designed to be both useful and attractive, providing clear directions and information to help people explore Barnsley’s vibrant streets.

Barnsley town centre has undergone a significant transformation, and aims to be a top spot for shopping, dining, and entertainment in the region. The new wayfinding totems are an important part of this change, helping visitors enjoy everything the town has to offer.

With attractions including Barnsley Civic, Barnsley Market, The Cooper Gallery, and The Glass Works, there’s something for everyone in the town and the new totems will make it easier to navigate between these attractions.

Matt O'Neill, Executive Director for Growth and Sustainability said, “We are excited to introduce these new wayfinding totems. They show our commitment to making Barnsley a better place for visitors.

“Visitor numbers to Barnsley town centre are bucking national trends and beating our own targets, showing its increasing appeal. A packed events programme, alongside continued investment have helped to reinforce Barnsley’s reputation as a welcoming and lively town centre.

“As more people visit our town centre, it’s important to provide clear and easy navigation between our fantastic attractions.”

All excavations are small in nature and are securely closed off. The works will be carried out in the very early morning to minimise any impact of disruptions.
