We’re pleased to announce the winners of our special Penistone Sheep Trail art competition.
This contest was held to celebrate the art and creativity of our young people and encourage everyone to explore the Penistone Sheep Trail.
The trail was officially launched last October, with six cheerful characters dotted around town, including a cycling sheep, a bookworm sheep and a roller-skating sheep. There are also five sheep-themed benches to take a seat on.
Funded by our Principal Towns Programme, the sculpture trail aims to encourage people living in Penistone and visitors to the market town to explore the area and enjoy some of its local landmarks and attractions.
Earlier this year, we invited young people from the Penistone area to draw a picture of their favourite sheep on the trail and suggest a name.
The high standard of the artwork submitted and the imagination behind the various names put forward meant it was not an easy task for our judging panel - including members of Barnsley Youth Council - to select their favourites.
The winners chosen were:
- Freddie Swift, of Silkstone Common Junior and Infant School, who chose the name Sandra for the cycling sheep on the Trans Pennine Trail.
- Leo Clayton, also of Silkstone Common Junior and Infant School, who picked the name Woolly Wilson for the book-reading sheep outside Penistone Library.
- Ethan Watmough, of Cawthorne Primary School, who suggested the name Poppy for the sheep outside the Penistone Paramount Cinema.
- Ava Helliwell, who drew one of the sheep benches outside Penistone Market Barn and selected the name Ava Saver.
Each of the winners was presented with a winner’s certificate by our Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, Cllr Robin Franklin.
Cllr Franklin said: “My fellow judges and I were so impressed with the entries for our Penistone Sheep Trail art competition.
“There were some baa-rilliant names suggested, while the artwork we received was colourful, detailed and joyful.
“Well done to everyone who took part, and congratulations to our winners. ‘Ewe’ really nailed it!”
“We’ve had some great feedback about the Penistone Sheep Trail so far, and I hope everyone will continue to have fun following the trail of woolly wonders and exploring what this beautiful market town has to offer.”
