As part of our commitment to public safety, two Barnsley companies have recently been prosecuted for food safety offences, being ordered to pay over £14,000 in fines and costs.

TSN Foods Ltd, who own Darfield Super Store, and Lastorders Food and Wine Ltd, who own Premier – Last Orders in Wombwell, appeared in Barnsley Magistrates Court last week.

Both companies appeared on charges under the Food Safety Act 1990 and the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013.

TSN Foods Ltd pleaded guilty to seven offences committed in December 2023, covering:

• Failure to comply with improvement notices, requiring the proper labelling of pre-packed food, including the business name and address, mandatory food information on products in England and the nutritional declaration in the specified legal format.
• The sale of unsafe food items, which were incorrectly over-stickered, concealing allergenic ingredients and other key food information.
• Failure to notify the competent authority that as an establishment, they produced, processed and distributed food.

They were ordered to pay £10,933.34 for these offences.

Lastorders Food and Wine Ltd pleaded guilty to two offences committed in January 2024, covering:

• Failure to comply with an improvement notice, requiring mandatory food information to be provided in English on labels of the pre-packed food they were selling.
• The sale of unsafe food items which concealed allergenic ingredients.

They were ordered to pay £3,931.96 for these offences.

Thanks to the hard work of our Legal Services and Trading Standards team, these prosecutions show how we will take action to ensure food safety standards are maintained in our businesses.
