Help us put Barnsley on the map by getting creative for the Tour of Britain

We’re calling for budding artists and creative crafters to pull out all the stops and help Barnsley shine when the Tour of Britain comes to town.

The borough is gearing up for the arrival of the men’s race in the UK's most prestigious cycling competition on Thursday, 5 September.

We will host the final leg of stage three, which will see some of the world's best riders racing through the borough's high streets, villages and scenic countryside before sprinting for the finish line in the town centre.

To celebrate this exciting event, we’re encouraging everyone to get creative and decorate homes, shops, and streets with bunting, posters, and colourful displays.

Maybe you’re a member of a craft group who can produce amazing – or you could work together with your community to produce something special.

We’ve also produced a special Tour of Britain activity pack, which includes templates and colouring sheets, as well as fun facts about cycling and the Tour of Britain to help people get involved.

Download your own printable activity pack by heading to our special Tour of Britain webpage and looking for the "Get Involved" section.

Alternatively, you can grab a copy of the activity sheets from libraries, Barnsley Museums sites, Area Teams and Family Hubs - and get cracking on producing some colourful designs.

There’s even a special art competition celebrating the best of Barnsley, which you can enter until Friday, 30 August. Find out all the details in the pack or when you pick up your activity sheets.

Cllr Wendy Cain, cabinet spokesperson for public health and communities, said: “We’re delighted to welcome the Tour of Britain to Barnsley, and we want to make it a memorable occasion for everyone.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase our town and our borough to a national and international audience and to inspire more people to get active and enjoy cycling.

“I urge everyone to get creative and show their support for the cyclists by producing artwork or hand-made decorations and lining the route.

“The race will be broadcast live on TV in the UK and beyond, so let's show the world our Barnsley spirit and make our town shine in the international spotlight.”

The Tour of Britain is the UK's biggest and most prestigious cycle race, attracting the world's top cyclists, including Olympic and world champions, as well as Tour de France winners.
