A COMMUNITY radio station is helping more people take to the airwaves thanks to support from our Pride of Place grants scheme.
Penistone FM has invested in new IT equipment at its HQ in the market town and training for new presenters.
The radio station’s computers had become obsolete and prone to breakdown, so station manager Martin Sugden and his team jumped at the chance to replace them.
The £6,100 grant awarded to Penistone FM is among more than 50 allocated to community-led groups across Barnsley under the Pride of Place scheme.
The initiative was designed to empower community groups to invest in heritage assets, green spaces, community facilities and events.
In total, we awarded £547,124 in grants ranging from £5,000 to £30,000. We supported a variety of projects delivering a huge range of benefits
Station manager Martin Sugden said: “The funding was for new computers, new software and some training, so we can fill our daytime slots.
“We are grateful as the new system has definitely improved the lives of our volunteer presenters, and the new equipment will enable us to train volunteers with the latest technology, allowing them to learn new skills for life.”
Cllr Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said: “I am thrilled to see the tangible benefits of our Pride of Place grants scheme in action at Penistone FM.
“We have been able to empower local volunteers and ensure that the station continues to be a vital community resource.
“In Barnsley, we’re committed to developing skills, talent and creativity among people of all ages.
“This grant enhances the station's capabilities, while also fostering community spirit and engagement.”
Our Stronger Communities Team delivered the Pride of Place scheme, funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.
