The Great British Spring Clean has concluded for another year after volunteers, our neighbourhoods team, council staff and residents teamed up to clean our borough.

During the initiative, over 480 bags of litter were collected by those taking part in litter picks across the borough.

In total, over 1.2 tonnes of waste cleaned up from our parks, green spaces and streets.

Our neighbourhoods team also took part in the Spring Clean with clean ups taking place in Goldthorpe, Worsbrough, the Town Centre, Thurnscoe, Kendray, Lundwood and Darfield over the course of March.

Over the course of the neighbourhoods team’s action, 17.2 tonnes of rubbish was collected as part of litter picks and removing fly-tipping from each of the areas.

Anna Hartley, Executive Director for Public Health and Communities, said:

“I’d like to personally thank the fantastic volunteers, residents and our neighbourhoods team who all took part in the Great British Spring Clean and collected over 18 tonnes of litter during the initiative.

“We have a staggering number of volunteers who assist us not only for the Great British Spring Clean but throughout the year and it never ceases to amaze me how many people give up their time to help across the borough.

“It’s an amazing effort from everyone involved and it’s great to see the initiative being successful in making Barnsley cleaner and greener for us all.”

Litter picks took place across Barnsley as part of the initiative set up by Keep Britain Tidy with a selection of the events shared on our Everybody Think Facebook page.
