Cabinet to discuss significant investment in our roads through this year's Highways Capital Maintenance Programme

Next week, Cabinet members will meet to discuss this year’s Highways Capital Programme and the proposed £17.3M investment in Barnsley’s roads.

This includes just under £11.3m for the annual Highways Capital Maintenance programme, an additional £2m investment for principal roads and side streets as part of our Community Enhancement Programme and £2.07m from the government’s funding for potholes and highway maintenance.

The Highways Capital Programme has proposed improvements to carriageways and footways at various locations across the borough. The programme continues our ‘prevention is better than cure’ approach in determining the balance between structural, preventative, and reactive maintenance to improve the resilience of the highway.

Cllr James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said:

“We are proud to bring the Highways Capital Programme to cabinet and continue the investment in our roads.

“In total, just under £17.3m is to be invested into our highway network over the next financial year so we can continue to build upon the progress we have already made in improving the roads across the borough.

“Our sustained investment is improving Barnsley’s roads, investing in our communities and unlocking economic growth opportunities across the borough.

“I’d like to thank our highways team for their incredible efforts during the last financial year, with team’s working in all conditions and throughout the night to improve our road network.”
