Next week, Cabinet members will discuss this year’s Highways Capital Maintenance programme, which is proposing to see up to £17M invested into Barnsley’s roads and Active Travel initiatives across the borough.
This includes £12.8M for the Highways Capital Maintenance programme, an additional £2M for highways works on local B and C roads that connect small towns and villages across the borough, and a further £2.2M to be spent on Active Travel initiatives, funded through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement,
This highways infrastructure work continues the ‘prevention is better than cure’ approach in determining the balance between structural, preventative, and reactive maintenance to improve the resilience of the highway. The Highways Capital Programme has proposed improvements to carriageways and footways at various locations across the borough.
We’ll continue to deliver the programme in the most efficient way we can, including recycling materials from works where possible. Existing road surface is recycled after being removed, and kerbstones and old street lighting columns can be crushed to produce material which can be used in other construction works.
Matt O'Neil Executive Director for Growth and Sustainability said: “We're proud to announce a continuation of the substantial investment into our highway network through this year's budget.
“In total, up to £17M is set to be invested into the infrastructure this year to build upon the investment we made last year and further improve our roads, benefit our communities and unlock economic opportunities.
“Ahead of the start of this year’s Capital Programme, I’d also like to thank our highways team for their exceptional efforts during the last financial year, with team’s working overnight and in all conditions to improve our road network.”
