The Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr James Michael Stowe, is delighted to invite you and your families to join him and the mayoress at Barnsley’s annual Civic Carol service on Thursday 21 December at St Mary's Parish Church, Church Street, Barnsley.
The service starts at 4pm, but we kindly ask that attendees arrive from 3.45pm to make sure everyone is seated before the civic party arrive. The traditional carol service will be led by Reverend Philip Maries, Rector of the Central Barnsley Benefice.
Barnsley’s Civic Carol Service is a long-standing tradition in Barnsley and provides a wonderful opportunity for families to get into the true spirit of Christmas with traditional carols, take a break from wrapping presents and reflect on the year.
You will also be treated to hymns performed by the fabulous Civic Choir - a group of choristers from across the borough coming together, especially for the service. The fabulous Barnsley Metropolitan Band will also be performing and accompanying some of the traditional carols you will have the opportunity to sing.
The Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Stowe, said: "Christmas festivities in Barnsley have been a real highlight of my Mayoral year so far. It’s been non-stop - from Barnsley Bright Nights and the Christmas Markets to Christmas at the Town Hall and celebrations within our communities, it’s been absolutely fantastic. I feel so honoured to be the Mayor of Barnsley and so proud of everything we’ve achieved this year.
“The Civic Carol Service is a real tradition in Barnsley and is such a lovely opportunity to bring our residents and communities together under one roof and then raise it with some traditional festive carols.
“We hope to see the church packed with families taking a break from Christmas preparations to take a moment to reflect and come together before the chaos and festivities get underway! So, we’d be delighted if you and your family could join me and the mayoress for this momentous and joyous occasion.
“I'd also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very healthy, happy Christmas and a very happy 2024"
The service is open to one and all - so please spread the word amongst family and friends. For more information, call the Mayor's Office on 01226 773804.
