Barnsley Metropolitan Band crowned Yorkshire Champions in the Third Section

Barnsley Metropolitan Band is delighted to have won the Yorkshire Area Final of the British Brass Band Championships.

Playing in the Third section, they competed with ten bands from across the region.

Barnsley Metropolitan Band impressed the judges with their performance of the test piece, Corineus by Christopher Bond. They received awards for the Best Percussion Section and the Roye Roe Memorial Trophy for the Winning Conductor, Alex Francis.

Alex has been conducting the band since 2007. He has overseen their remarkable progress from Fourth Section to the top of the Third Section. Alex said: "We’re delighted with the result. It marks a special moment in the bands history and the progress we’ve made in recent years.

We enjoyed listening to other competing bands, everyone involved performed to a really high standard. Congratulations to everyone for a great day of music making. I’d like to thank the band’s players, our partners, supporters and committee for their contribution to the band’s success."

Following the win, Barnsley Metropolitan Band has been invited to represent Yorkshire at the National Finals in September. At the finals, they will showcase their talent, competing with the best bands from across the country.

The result means that the band will be promoted to the Second Section next year, the highest section the band has ever been in.

Imogen Spencer, Tenor Horn player, said: “I joined Barnsley Metropolitan Band in 2021, when I was eleven. Everyone was so friendly and supportive, they helped me to progress with my playing ability. It's amazing how much more confidence, and friends I have gained since I joined.

I’m so proud to be part of a fantastic band that has worked hard to achieve first place together. It will be my second time to represent Yorkshire at the national finals in Cheltenham and I can't wait!"

Councillor Robin Franklin, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said: “Barnsley Music Service supports so many younger players with brass and percussion lessons in schools. It’s wonderful to see players of all ages developing their skills, talent and creativity. Music making in Barnsley is thriving, with so many opportunities for young musicians in the borough.”
