Barnsley Libraries’ ‘Telling Stories’ project has been shortlisted for a prestigious ‘Fantastic for Families Best Age-Friendly’ Outreach Award. This recognition highlights the library service's innovative approach to enhancing wellbeing and community connections through its Home Library Service.
The ‘Telling Stories’ pilot project focused on capturing the life stories of house-bound residents who use the Home Library Service. By spending time with residents and recording their oral histories, the project tackled issues of loneliness while celebrating the rich and diverse experiences of Barnsley’s older residents. These stories will form a lasting audio archive, available for other customers to enjoy. A public sharing and celebration event will be held during the Barnsley Book Festival on Monday 3 March 2025 at the Library @ the Lightbox.
The project was created based on feedback from customers and designed to be fair, inclusive, and enriching for everyone involved. At its core, it highlights the power of storytelling, celebrates local history, and shows how meaningful connections can improve wellbeing.

This recognition reflects the creativity, care, and dedication of the library team to make a real difference in the lives of residents who may otherwise feel isolated. Barnsley Libraries is committed to being a welcoming hub for the community, offering opportunities to learn, connect, and grow. The service operates 15 libraries across the borough and delivers a wide range of engaging activities for all ages. In addition to traditional library services, the team runs innovative programs such as code clubs for children, music and memories groups for those living with dementia, and creative arts initiatives.
This national recognition also acknowledges Barnsley Libraries’ status as a National Portfolio Organisation, supported by Arts Council England. This funding enables the service to continue developing culturally rich and inclusive programmes for all residents.
