Barnsley Libraries participates in the ‘Marvellous Makers’ Summer Reading Challenge with free activities for families

Over the weekend, Barnsley Libraries launched this year's Summer Reading Challenge, joining libraries across the country to spark the imagination of children aged 0-11 through the power of reading and creative expression, with over 200 young people in Barnsley already signed up.

‘Marvellous Makers’ is this year’s theme, and in partnership with Create, a leading arts charity, and public libraries, this year's challenge celebrates kids' creativity and storytelling abilities. Children will be encouraged to explore new books and stories while taking part in free activities, from arts and crafts to music, dance, and more.

Storyteller Olivia Corbin-Phillip, artist and ceramicist Evelyn Albrow, and Bollywood dancer Salma Zamann will be delivering sessions across all Barnsley Libraries branches throughout the summer. For more information on the exact locations and times, as well as other events, please visit the Barnsley Libraries events page.

Cllr Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Communities and Public Health, said: “Many children in our borough take part in the Summer Reading Challenge each year, and we’re certain that this year will be no different.

“Reading is not only a source of joy and adventure, but also a powerful tool for learning and development, so we are very proud to be taking part once again and providing an opportunity for children to get involved in this year’s challenge.”

Karen Napier, CEO of The Reading Agency, said: "The Summer Reading Challenge sparks children's creativity and imagination through reading. Developed with Create, this year's 'Marvellous Makers' theme will inspire kids' inner storytellers and makers.

“We're thrilled to work with libraries to provide an engaging environment for exploring new ideas through books and activities."

The Summer Reading Challenge aims to prevent the ‘summer dip’ learning loss many children experience over the holidays when they aren't in school. With libraries' support, it provides a free, fun way to keep young minds active. In 2023, over 685,000 children across the UK participated.

Summer Reading Challenge activities with artists at Barnsley Libraries are part of this year’s National Portfolio Organisation creative commissions, supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
