Barnsley Libraries has been named as one of the best libraries in North England, as part of the 2025 British Book Awards.

Our libraries service has been named as a Regional and Country finalist for Library of the Year, an award which launched last year and celebrates the vital role that public libraries play in our communities.

Barnsley Libraries were highlighted among 36 other libraries across the country, who all put reading at the heart of what they do and develop projects to support the local community.

Judges selected Barnsley for the fantastic work of our National Portfolio Organisation Team, who support exciting cultural activities across our libraries, including developing the travelling Story Shell with international artists Suzie Devey and Steve Messam, to encourage reading in new creative ways.

Cllr Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said: “I’m thrilled that our libraries service and the team behind it are being recognised for the fantastic work that they do. From exciting and engaging events which share the love of reading, to the refurbishment programme improving libraries across Barnsley, I continue to be incredibly proud of the libraries service we have across our communities.”
