Barnsley Council’s response to the Local Government Boundary Commission for England's (LGBCE) 2023 Ward Boundary Review, will be presented to Cabinet on Wednesday 14 August.
The LGBCE is an independent body that reviews the electoral and boundary arrangements of councils to make sure they are fair.
These responses to the LGBCE's draft recommendations for Barnsley’s future ward boundaries aim to make sure councillors represent about the same number of electors, and that ward arrangements will help the council work effectively.
Summary of our responses to the LGBCE’s proposal:
- St. Helen’s Ward: Retention of the current ward name to reflect the entire community, including New Lodge and Smithies residents.
- Dearne Wards: Preservation of the Dearne North and Dearne South ward names, recognising the community ties within these areas.
- Rockingham Ward: Suggestion to keep Birdwell in the Rockingham Ward, preserving the current boundary between Rockingham and Worsbrough.
- Worsbrough Ward: Recommendation for Worsbrough Common to move from Kingstone to Worsbrough Ward.
- Kingstone Ward: Proposal to incorporate parts of Keresforth Hill, Shawlands, and Pogmoor, currently in Dodworth ward, into Kingstone ward.
- Dodworth, Stainborough and Tankersley Ward: Inclusion of Stainborough and Tankersley parishes to reflect local governance.
