We are delighted to join this year’s Recycle Week (14 – 20 October) to celebrate the efforts of people in Barnsley and help us all to recycle right.
Now in its twenty-first year, Recycle Week (organised by Recycle Now) is the UK’s biggest celebration of recycling. For Recycle Week 2024, we are joining the campaign to raise awareness of five types of packaging that are often thrown away to encourage residents to put them in the correct recycling bin
The latest Recycle Now research shows that while nine out of ten people regularly recycle – nearly eight out of ten of us (79%) put one or more items into the bin that could have been recycled.
Regularly thrown away items that can be recycled are aerosol cans, yoghurt pots, perfume bottles and toilet roll tubes, and we will be highlighting these items alongside general recycling tips and tricks throughout Recycle Week.
Residents are also encouraged to take part in the Great Cable Challenge at our pop-up collection points in the Glass Works Atrium, principal town libraries (Cudworth, Penistone, Hoyland, Royston, Goldthorpe and Wombwell) and the Lightbox Library.
Councillor James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said:
“Recycle week is an important annual event to raise awareness of what can and can’t be recycled so we can all do our bit to help Barnsley be clean and green.
“This year, the focus is on items that often get thrown into our grey bins when in fact, they can be recycled into something new if they are placed in our brown and blue bins.
“We can all do our bit to recycle right and make sure the right things end up in the right bin.”
