Barnsley Celebrates the completion of Eldon Street Heritage Action Zone

A day of fun and festivities to mark the end of a four-year project to restore and revitalise one of Barnsley's historic high streets

The Eldon Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) project, funded by Historic England and Barnsley Council, has come to an end after four years of working with local businesses and property owners to conserve and enhance key historic buildings on Eldon Street.

The project has also engaged the local community in uncovering and celebrating the stories and heritage of this important street, which has played a vital role in Barnsley's history.

To mark the achievements and the legacy of the project, a celebration event will take place on Tuesday, 9 July between 12noon and 4pm, featuring a range of exciting activities and entertainment for all ages and interests.

It’s an opportunity to say thank you to everyone who has contributed to the success of the HSHAZ, from the funders and partners, to the businesses and property owners, to the volunteers and participants, to the artists and performers.

The celebration event will include:

  • Eldon Street themed family activities in the Library at the Lightbox, where children can make create and learn about the history of the street through interactive games and quizzes.
  • Street performers and entertainment including music and tours.
  • A silent disco featuring the songs written by poet laureate Simon Armitage and LYR, all inspired by Eldon Street and its heritage.
  • A free cinema screening in the Parkway cinema, featuring short films about Eldon Street followed by a screening of Calendar Girls.

The celebration event will also be honoured by the visit of Lord Mendoza, Chair of Historic England, who will be touring the street and looking at the work that has been done as part of the HSHAZ project. He will be meeting with some of the project partners and beneficiaries and learning about the impact of the HSHAZ on the regeneration and revitalisation of Eldon Street and Barnsley town centre.

Jon Finch, Head of Culture and Visitor Economy said: "We are delighted to celebrate the completion of the Eldon Street Heritage Action Zone project, which has been a fantastic example of collaboration and partnership working to preserve and enhance the character and heritage of this important street. The project has not only improved the appearance and condition of the historic buildings, but also engaged the local community in discovering and celebrating the stories and memories of Eldon Street and its connection to the people of Barnsley. The celebration event is a great opportunity to showcase the achievements and the legacy of the project, and to thank everyone who has been involved and supported us along the way. We hope that everyone will join us for a day of fun and festivities and help us mark this special occasion.”

Lord Mendoza, Chair of Historic England, said: “I’m proud that Historic England has been able to play its part in breathing new life into this wonderful part of Barnsley. I have long been an admirer of Barnsley Council’s recognition of the importance of culture and heritage in civic life. The Eldon Street High Street Heritage Action Zone demonstrates so clearly how the power of heritage can be harnessed to improve economic opportunities and unite communities.”
