We’re delighted to announce the winners of our Tour of Britain art competition, which showcased a wealth of talent.
This exciting competition was held to celebrate Barnsley being selected to host the finish of Stage Three of this year’s Men’s Race.
The race brought some of the biggest names in world cycling to town in September and saw thousands lining our streets to cheer them on.
We invited children to decorate their own “Barnsley wheel”, highlighting what they love about living in the borough, from their favourite place and favourite school subject to what activities they enjoy doing.
We received dozens of entries from right across Barnsley and beyond, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Barnsley had a tough job choosing the winners from such a strong field.
Our special Tour of Britain activity pack included a template for young people to design their own cycling jersey.
The artwork produced was so impressive we decided to select winners from among these designs, as well.
The winners were as follows:
Barnsley Wheel
Age 4 to 7: Esther Turner, age 7
Age 8 to 11: Rafe Nutter, age 9
Age 12 and over: Lottie Rhodes, age 13
Jersey design:
Age 4 to 7: Grace Harris, age 6
Age 8 and over: Georgia Finbow, age 10
The Deputy Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr David Leech, welcomed the winners and their families to the Town Hall to congratulate them and celebrate their impressive artwork.
Each winner was presented with a certificate and a Barnsley Gift Card.
Cllr Robin Franklin, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said: “We are very impressed with the creativity, imagination and artistic talent of the many young people who entered our Tour of Britain art competition.
“Hosting the race was a great honour for Barnsley and it is wonderful that our young artists were inspired to enter the contest and celebrate what makes living in Barnsley great.
“I’m sure everyone will join me in saying well done and thank you to everyone who took part in the competition and congratulations to all the winners.”
