Our aim is to get the people of Barnsley cycling and keep them moving. Our team of friendly cycle mechanics are here to support you with bike maintenance checks, loaning or donating a bike, improving your bike riding skills and more!
You can find us at the Bike Works HQ, at unit 5 in Barnsley Interchange. We also offer our services in the heart of the community.
Please note: The Bike Works HQ is currently closed for maintenance. Keep an eye out for us around the borough.
Our services
Free bike checks
Our mechanics can check over your bike and do minor adjustments to help it run more smoothly. We can do minor repairs and give you advice if bigger repairs are needed. We also offer advice on basic checks that will help make sure you can keep your bike running smoothly.
The Barnsley Bike Works mobile unit will be visiting communities in the borough, keep an eye out for dates!
Mobile Bike Works unit
As well as visiting locations across the borough, Barnsley Bike Works can visit you to offer free bike checks, repair days and ride outs. You can invite our mobile unit to your school, workplace or community group. We have experience delivering sessions to some of Barnsley’s largest businesses and schools, and we can tailor a program to suit your needs.
If you want to get your group or workplace cycling our team can put a ride together with our community fleet. This will include everything you need to get moving. We'll provide helmets, bikes and advice on cycling. We'll also lead the ride, giving your group the chance to discover the benefits of cycling.

E-bike loan scheme
If you want to try cycling to work, use cycling as your main transport or just get the wheels turning again then the E-bike loan scheme is a great way to get started You can sign up for one month to borrow one of our fleet of E-bikes. We provide a helmet, pannier bag and lock. Handovers can be done from Bike Works HQ or we'll be visiting locations in the community.

Barnsley Big Bike Recycle
Barnsley Bike Works is all about getting more people cycling and enabling them to access bikes in their community. The Big Bike Recycle is a scheme that takes in donations of unused or unwanted bikes and gives them a new lease of life.
Apply for a reconditioned bike
If you have financial, health or other social challenges you can apply to receive a reconditioned bike for free by completing the reconditioned bike application form.
Donate a bike
If you have a bike that is in usable condition that you want to donate it, you'll need to complete the bike donation form.
You'll then need to get your bike to us. You can do this by:
- dropping in to the Bike Works HQ - unit 5 of Barnsley Interchange (open Mondays and Fridays, 8:30am to 4:30pm)
- visiting us at a Bike Works community bike check - these happen across the borough, keep an eye out for an event near you.
- calling us on 07340 138849 to book an appointment for collection
Information and advice on local routes and travel planning
We can advise you on the best routes to take on your bike. Whether you're exploring the local trails and traffic free routes, or need to know the best way to get to work, we can advise on route plans or which is the best way.
We also like to hear about local routes from the communities who use them. So if you know a good route in your local area or use some of the cycle or traffic free routes like the Trans Pennine Trail, we'd love to hear from you.
Our mobile Bike Works unit can visit local businesses to keep the cyclists in Barnsley’s workforce moving. Route and journey planning for employees is one of the services we offer. To discuss further, call us on 07340 138849 or email barnsleybikeworks@barnsley.gov.uk.

Learn to Ride
It doesn’t matter what age you are, if you want to learn to cycle our friendly team can teach you. If you haven’t cycled for a long time and are feeling a bit rusty then sign up for a learn to ride session. Sessions are delivered in traffic free locations across the borough. The Bike Works team can advise on the correct set up and have some great advice on the best way to get you from wobbly wheels to confident cyclist.

'Fix it' classes
We offers maintenance classes in community venues across the borough as well as from the Bike Works HQ in Barnsley town centre. Class size is a maximum of five so the Bike Works mechanic can focus on making sure that the group get the most out of the session. Bring your own bike and learn how to maintain it with more confidence and keep it rolling.
Sessions cover:
- puncture repair and wheels maintenance
- brake adjustment and pad wear
- principles of gear adjustment
- regular safety check guidance
- tool recommendations
