A Barnsley Council spokesperson said: "We are aware of the rumoured protests circulating on social media and are working closely with South Yorkshire Police.
"Businesses in Barnsley have been emailed information on how to keep themselves and their staff safe. This includes guidance on reporting concerns or any anti-social behaviour. Additionally, letters will be distributed throughout the day to offer further support. Licensed premises have also been contacted with information and advice on maintaining safety.
"We have not instructed any business or licensed premises to close. Any decisions to close have been made independently by the businesses based on their own comfort levels and risk assessments."
