Entries

You can enter the race via our entry provider Race Best from 5pm on Sunday 1 December 2024.

Entries to the 2024 event sold out in 48 hours. No entries can be made on the day of the race.

Race route

The race route will pass through Barnsley town centre, Wilthorpe and Redbrook, before looping back around at the Claycliffe Road area.

Race time limit

The event will be closed to traffic from 8:30am to 11am, and the event will start at 9am.

The time limit for the event will be two hours. Runners on the route beyond this time will be asked to move to our pavements safely. You'll still be allowed to finish and collect your post-race merchandise beyond this time. 

There'll be a vehicle following the event moving at a speed of 3mph. This will operate a rolling road closure. If the vehicle goes beyond you at any point you'll need to be mindful and move safely to the pavement.

Race numbers

Race number collection

Race numbers can be collected prior to the event day from the reception area within Barnsley Market in The Glass Works. They can be collected at the following times:

• Thursday 26 June - 11am to 5pm.
• Friday 27 June - 11am to 5pm.
• Saturday 28 June - 12pm to 3:30pm.

On the day of the event race HQ will be open from 7:15am to 8:45am for you to collect your race number.

Using your race number

• Please affix your number to the front of your t-shirt, jacket or vest. This must be on your outermost layer of clothing and visible for everyone to see clearly.
• Safety pins are recommended to affix your number to your race top.
• To ensure accurate timing of the event for all involved we'll be using chip timing technology. Please follow the instructions supplied with your chip correctly.

Race HQ

This will be located on the day of the event in the atrium of the indoor market in The Glass Works. You can gain access through the double entry doors opposite New Look.

In Race HQ you'll find number collection, our race information desk and baggage drop-off on the day of the event.

Baggage

On the day of the event we'll be hosting a full baggage drop off service for participants. We'll be asking participants to attach a tag to their own bag to leave securely in our race HQ with our team of staff and volunteers.

Although we'll do our best to keep your baggage safe on the day of the event, it's left at your own risk and we advise no valuable items are placed in our baggage area as we can't be held responsible for any damages made.

Race information pack

We'll be sending out the race information pack to participants ahead of the race. Check back on this page regularly for updates.

Getting to the race 

On foot 

This is the best way to access the event. You could use it as a long warm-up and cool down before and after the race. Road closures will start from 8:30am to 11am on the day of the race. Access will not be restricted to the town centre for people on foot.

Bike

If you arrive by bike we have bike parking available in the Barnsley Bike Works in Barnsley Interchange.

Bus

Bus services will be operating a normal Sunday service. However, if the bus does usually access the town centre between 8:30am and 11am you should expect diversions to be in place. Take a look at the Travel South Yorkshire website for more details.

Car

Road closures are scheduled to commence at 8:30am and will reopen fully around 11am on the day of the race. Diversions will be in place around the event around West Way, Shambles Street and Huddersfield Road.

Train

Barnsley is well connected by our rail service. Barnsley Interchange on Eldon Street North has easy access to the town centre attractions, links across the region and is less than 400m from the start line of the Barnsley 10k.

Road closures

Road closures on the day of the event will be managed by Rapid Response Telecoms. These will be done to minimise impact. We'll be operating a rolling road closure throughout the event giving access as and when needed for blue light services.

The roads we'll be utilising throughout the event are as follows.

Going out of the town centre:

Rolling road closure

The rolling road closure will operate as follows:

• All traffic management in place at 8:30am.
• Race start for 9am.
• 9:15am to 9:20am Peel Street will be reopened to allow access to shops and frontages.
• 9:15am to 9:20am the Town End Roundabout will be fully reopened including normal access to West Way.
• 10:30am closures on the roundabout of Whaley Road moved back to the bottom of Redbrook Road.
• Two traffic management vans to follow last runner collecting road closure signage from side roads along Wilthorpe Road.
• 11am the last runner enters town centre and all other closures are to be lifted except access to town centre to allow for safe finish of remaining runners.
• 11:30am traffic management to clear site taking clear photos of all junctions including all advanced warning signs.
• Residents and businesses who surround these roads and will typically utilise these roads during the hours of 8:30am to 11am on a Sunday morning will be informed. The utmost will be done to make sure we minimise disruption throughout the event.

Volunteer

Volunteering at the Barnsley 10k promises to be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. There's a variety of roles available such as:

• event marshalling
• registration on the morning of the event
• registration the day before the event
• water station
• handing out finishers t-shirts and medals
• participant information
• kit drop support
• course set-up and takedown
• route marshal
• photography
• videography

If you're interested in volunteering at the Barnsley 10k, please fill in the online registration form.

You'll need to be available on Sunday 29 June between the hours of 7am to 12pm.

There are also specific roles to support with number distribution on 28 June if you're taking part in the event and still want to support your community.

Fundraising

We welcome fundraising for a local charity within the Barnsley area by taking part in Barnsley 10k. As part of our promise to local charities, 100 places will be offered at 50% of the cost if you're a registered charity and are active within the Barnsley area.

All entrants that enter through charities must raise a minimum of £100 per entrant, and charities are welcome to ask for more than a minimum of £100, however this is to keep it equal amongst all partners.
