What's active travel?
Active travel means using walking or cycling to get about. It's healthier, and better for the environment too.
Children who get exercise and fresh air on their way to school are more alert and attentive in class - ask any teacher. That means they get a flying start in school.
Active travel can also:
- help you get fit and stay a healthy weight
- improve mental health
- limit pollution
- reduce congestion
- improve road safety
If you're going too far to walk or cycle, please think about using public transport. You can check the bus timetables and journey planners from Travel South Yorkshire to find out where you can catch a bus and what times they run.
We can help you to find a bike, or learn to ride one. You can also find out about cycle routes and where to cycle and how to plan your active journey.

How schools can get involved
The Sustainable Travel Accreditation and Recognition Scheme (STARS) works with pupils, parents and teachers to use fun and educational activities to show the benefits of active travel.
Modeshift STARS is a national awards scheme. Schools that promote active travel to and from school can be recognised on a local, regional and national stage.
The STARS South Yorkshire project is free for all schools within Barnsley, Sheffield, Doncaster and Rotherham to take part in.
