Education Welfare Service
Our service
Our team includes over 16 education welfare officers (EWOs). Their role is to make sure the regular school attendance, welfare and wellbeing of pupils. They do this through assessment and home-school contact.
Our management team includes a service manager, two area managers, and two senior EWOs.

Jane Allen

Jane manages all functions of the service. She makes sure that all duties are carried out correctly with regard to:
- pupil absence
- safeguarding
- children missing education
- elective home education
- child employment
- performance licensing
She's the lead officer for the development of the council's strategy for raising attendance in schools across the borough. She's also the named attendance lead for the council.

Jake is responsible for:
- the management, supervision and performance of EWOs. This relates to both statutory and non statutory duties.
- making sure the team improves outcomes for children and young people. This includes a focus on vulnerable groups.
- sharing up-to-date good practice in line with national and local policy. This is done through training on attendance and safeguarding.
- working with partners as outlined in the traded service model.

Derek is responsible for:

Senior EWO - youth offending team

Lynne is responsible for the assessment and support of vulnerable young people who:
- are disengaged from learning opportunities
- face multiple barriers
- are subject to youth offending team interventions
She provides a link between the youth offending team (YOT), the education welfare service and schools.
