Road safety resources
There are lots of resources that can be used to help children and young people understand the importance of staying safe on our roads. Below is a collection of activities, resources, and sessions which can be booked by schools to help deliver road safety education.
Resources and activities for primary school aged children
Jessy's Journey
Jessy's Journey is a session for year 6 pupils to raise their awareness about journey planning and the different ways they could travel to secondary school. The session is delivered in the school classroom and is free of charge.
For schools taking part in the Modeshift STARS active travel accreditation scheme, this session meets codes R13 and PT3.

Bikeability (cycle proficiency) for primary schools
Bikeability is the cycle proficiency programme, teaching children how to cycle safely, learn how to deal with traffic, and get them excited about cycling. It gives young people the skills and confidence to ride a bike safely, especially on roads.
Levels 1 and 2 for primary schools consist of five half-day sessions (level one on playground, level two on-road training) within the local area of the school.

Be bright, be seen
Be bright, be seen is a lesson plan for children aged 3 to 6 to help them improve their road safety skills and think about how they can travel safely in the dark and when it’s hard to see.
The activities improve knowledge of the importance of reflective and high visibility features of clothes, bikes and scooters. It also includes the Be bright, be seen game.
Roadstars
Roadstars from Road Safety Scotland is a collection of interactive activities for primary school aged children to challenge their road safety knowledge.
Activities cover topics including road signs, stopping distances, vehicle blind spots, and pedestrian crossings.
Tales of the Road
Tales of the Road is a useful guide for children of primary school age to keep themselves and other safe.
It includes sections about walking, cycling, using public transport, road markings, traffic lights and signals.
Crucial Crew
Crucial Crew is a session for year 6 pupils to provide them with the knowledge, skills and strategies to make informed choices in everyday life. Children take part in a variety of scenarios and learn through practical sessions covering:
- road safety
- antisocial behaviour
- shop lifting
- youth court
- first aid
- drug and alcohol awareness
- internet safety and cyber-bullying
- bus safety
- running away from home
The session takes place at the Lifewise Centre, Kea Park Close, Hellaby, Rotherham, S66 8LB and lasts for a full school day. There's no charge for the activity, but booking is required by emailing info@lifewise999.co.uk.
For schools taking part in the Modeshift STARS active travel accreditation scheme, this session meets code R6.
Play it safe
Play it safe is an animation activity for year 2 pupils to raise awareness of road safety and fire safety in the home. The animation is shown in all primary and infant schools in South Yorkshire, alongside a fun-packed session by community safety staff.
Lasting approximately 60 minutes, this free session can be booked by calling the Fire Service Community Safety Hotline on 0114 2532314.
For schools taking part in the Modeshift STARS active travel accreditation scheme, this session meets code R11.
Think Stop Rewind
Think Stop Rewind is a set of classroom resources for children in year 4 all about road safety:

Resources and activities for secondary school aged children
Ghost Street
Ghost Street is a road safety session for year 8 pupils. With a film of a number of traffic collisions, the session includes a discussion of how these could have been avoided - looking at risks, actions, consequences and responsibilities.
The objectives of the sessions are to:
- identify hazards as a pedestrian
- discuss why wearing a helmet is important
- think about car safety
- develop English skills through the use of verbal communication
The session lasts 60 minutes and takes part in the school's hall. There's no charge for the activity, but booking is required by emailing saferroads@barnsley.gov.uk.
For schools taking part in the Modeshift STARS active travel accreditation scheme, this session meets code R9.
Bikeability (cycle proficiency) for secondary schools
Bikeability is the cycle proficiency programme, teaching young people how to cycle safely, learn how to deal with traffic, and get them excited about cycling. It gives young people the skills and confidence to ride a bike safely, especially on roads.
Level 3 is for secondary schools consists of a 2-hour session of on-road training.

Road safety sessions for those not in mainstream education
The South Yorkshire charity HOPE deliver road safety workshops for young people aged 13 to 18 years who aren't in mainstream education. The hour long sessions are run by people who used to work for the emergency services, and focus on helping young people become safer road users when travelling by car.
