Regeneration
Wombwell is lively market town with a diverse choice for shoppers. It boasts a host of attractive and historic buildings and a thriving business community.
The town centre has benefitted from enhancements under the Council’s Principal Towns and Local Centres Programme. It has a bright future and more developments are planned.
Wombwell sits on the Trans Pennine Trail, is surrounded by green belt and is a stone’s throw from wetland nature reserves.
Take a stroll in the park and the woods, have a cuppa and a chat at the town’s many popular cafes or a browse of the market and independent shops. There’s plenty of free parking so you don’t have to worry about staying too long.
What we’ve done
Wombwell town centre has seen major changes as part of our Principal Towns and Local Centres programme.
Shop front grant scheme
We have helped hundreds of businesses across Barnsley to refresh and update their signage and shopfronts.
A total of 60 shops in Wombwell were improved with investment of £233,000 from the Council and £85,000 of match funding from business owners.
Safety improvements to the town centre
We also installed new CCTV on the high street to improve public safety and protect businesses.
Public realm improvements
The council bought and plans to demolish the disused public toilets on the high street. This will create more space for market traders and events and improve the appearance of the area.
We laid new paving, resurfaced the road and installed new seating, bins and planters. We also painted of barriers and lamp posts to brighten up the high street.
Our aim is to make Wombwell a more attractive, welcoming and safe place to shop and work, and to support the local economy.
What we’ll do next
We'll continue to make the town centre more attractive by demolishing the disused toilet block and improve the street scene.
Further projects will be developed in consultation with local people.
