A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is a written order which makes it an offence to cut down, top, lop, uproot, wilfully damage or destroy a tree without our permission.

We use TPOs to protect trees that have a significant visual impact on the environment. This can include individual trees, groups of trees and those in defined areas or woodlands.

Trees protected by a TPO

You can find out if a tree is protected by a TPO on the map below. You can search for a location using a postcode or address, or zoom into an area of the map.

Tick the Tree Preservation Orders option in the map legend to show trees that are protected by a TPO. These will display as a green dot on the map. Select a dot to find out more about the TPO, such as if it covers a single tree or group of trees, and a description.

Request a copy of a TPO

If you're a homeowner, seller, buyer or solicitor and you need to obtain a copy of a TPO, please email legalservices@barnsley.gov.uk. You'll need to include details of the reference number and tree reference number as displayed on the map.

Please only email our Legal Services team if you need to obtain a copy of a TPO. For all other enquiries please contact us online.

Carrying out works to trees covered by a TPO and conservation areas

In most circumstances, if you want to fell or prune a protected tree, you must apply for permission.

You need to apply for permission on the Planning Portal website.

In some circumstances we may allow pruning or removal to accommodate development. However the TPO means we can control any works and arrange new planting to replace trees that are removed.

If on purpose you damage or destroy a protected tree, you could be liable to fines of up to £20,000 via the Magistrates Court. You could also be liable for unlimited fines via the Crown Court. You could also be fined if you cause or permit such work.

Reporting works to a protected tree without permission

If you become aware of anyone pruning or felling a protected tree without permission, please contact us online. You can also call our enforcement team on (01226) 773555.
