Libraries
Heart of the community
Our branches are a space to connect with others and explore what the library has to offer.
Children, young people and adults can relax, work, study and learn. You can peruse a book, get online, meet up with friends or access our services.
Our friendly staff are happy to answer any questions and provide any help when you need it.
Your digital hub
Whether you need to connect the internet, charge your laptop or use a computer, our libraries are a digital hub in the community.
Access council services
You can access online council services from every library. You can apply for a service, report a problem, make a booking or pay for something.
Don't worry if you need some help to do this- we're on hand to support you.
For more complex queries where you need to speak to someone face to face, you can make an appointment to see us.
Join in our activities
We run a range of activities every week across all of our branches.
For young children there's story and rhyme, crafts and Lego club. Older children can get involved with coding club and maker space sessions.
There's plenty for adults too, with reading clubs, crafts, IT sessions and employment support.
Space for events
The Connecting Place at Library @ the Lightbox offers a flexible area for events. It can also be used as a presentation space for up to 45 people.
Get involved with a range of creative and cultural events, such as Get it Loud in Libraries. This brings new and emerging artists into the library for live music sessions.
Health and wellbeing
We have regular health and wellbeing sessions at our library branches. There's also a space for private health consultations at Library @ the Lightbox, as well as baby clinic and baby massage sessions, and mother and child mindfulness.
For those needing a quiet space, the sanctuary room at Library @ the Lightbox provides a relaxing area for children and adults with autism. It can be used any time we're open - just drop in.
Ready for business

Check your emails, charge your tablet and prepare for the day whilst grabbing a coffee.
Plus show your clients how innovative Barnsley is within a striking, modern environment.
Support for those seeking sanctuary
All of our libraries are safe spaces.
We support the City of Sanctuary vision that the UK will be a welcoming place of safety for all, and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.
Home library service
If you can't get to a library branch, we can come to you! If you're ill or have disability, our home library service can deliver books to you.
You can also borrow a tablet pre-loaded with eBooks, magazines and more.
