Annual leave

You'll receive 23 to 31 days annual leave, with added discretionary days and public holidays (pro-rata for part time employees). There's also other special leave provisions, such as time off for dependants. Plus you can buy more annual leave if you need to.

Work-life balance

You can work flexibly across Barnsley for three days a week, with the choice to work remotely for the rest of your working week.

Our flexi scheme allows you to adjust your hours or take time off when you need it. It could be to give your mum a lift to hospital or to watch the children on sports day.

You can take one full day or two half days of flexi leave each month. You can even bank a full or half day to add to your annual leave balance - up to five days per leave year.

Ways we celebrate

We celebrate our teams’ achievements in a range of ways, including case studies in our weekly newsletter and sharing compliments from residents or other team members.

Long service awards

Long service is recognised every five years for all employees. This includes teaching and support staff based in locally managed schools.

Employees with 25, 40 and 50 years’ service are also invited to attend a ceremony with the Mayor. They receive a long service certificate, as well as a gift card. One working day of paid discretionary leave is also added to their annual leave allowance. For teaching and support staff this will be one working day's pay in lieu.

Recognition events

Our Directorate Recognition Awards celebrate the performance and contributions of all our employees.

Each directorate has their own event, with award categories to suit the needs of their services. These may include:

  • Outstanding Contribution Award
    This award is to recognise someone who's made a positive impact through their dedication, effort, and overall contribution.

  • Going the Extra Mile Award
    This award is for someone who consistently goes above and beyond their regular duties, showing their commitment and work ethic.

  • Team of the Year Award
    This award celebrates the achievement of a team that has worked together to deliver outstanding results.

  • Most Innovative Project Award

Employee assistance programme

You can access a free confidential support network, offering expert advice and compassionate guidance on a wide range of issues.

This is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Plus the service can also be used by your immediate family too.
