As well as helping you gain skills, it can also be fun!
Our volunteers help deliver services to local people and neighbourhoods. They're an essential part of a network of people and groups. They help create stronger and healthier communities.
Everyone in Barnsley is supported to help their local community through volunteering. This is regardless of their gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, religious belief, marital status, pregnancy or gender identity. It also helps those who may otherwise be isolated to mix with others. People from different backgrounds get the chance to meet and get to know each other. This could be older people and younger people working together. It could also be local residents working alongside new arrivals to the borough.
The skills and knowledge you get can also give you confidence and help you move towards getting a paid job.
How to get involved
There's lots of chances to volunteer. This includes supporting events, working in our libraries, and at Barnsley museums.

Suzanne - infant feeding team
Suzanne started volunteering with us in our infant feeding team. She said, "I loved volunteering with the infant feeding service. I enjoy meeting mums and helping them with their babies. It felt like I was giving something back to all the ladies that helped me with my own. It also helped me to do something worthwhile with the time I had spare."
Since starting out as a volunteer, Suzanne secured a full-time post with us in our infant feeding team.
David - Barnsley libraries
David started volunteering with us in May 2017. After completing a successful work experience placement at the library whilst at college. He was offered a regular Saturday volunteering role. His main role is helping restock shelves and interacting with customers who visit the library. As well as recommending books they might enjoy reading.
David says, "I come here every Saturday morning. Also if I had a day off college I would volunteer for some extra events. Usually craft activities which can be really busy. I’ve got the motivation to stay, and I'm going to start running a Lego club here. I started a new job after I left college. Volunteering with the library has helped me to work well with lots of people."
