A change in your circumstances can affect the amount of Council Tax you pay. You need to tell us about any changes so that we can make sure you’re paying the right amount.
Change your home address
When you change your home address, please tell us straight away so we can update your Council Tax account. This includes if you’re a Berneslai Homes or private rented tenant.
Moving within the area to another property
Fill in our change of address form if you're:
- moving from one Barnsley address to another
- responsible for paying Council Tax at a property in the Barnsley area and you move
- a first-time buyer, renter or occupier in the area
Moving into the area
If you’re moving into the Barnsley area from another area or from abroad, you need to register for Council Tax at the address.
Moving out of the area
Fill in our change of address form if:
- you’re moving out of the Barnsley area to another area or abroad
- you will no longer be responsible for Council Tax in the Barnsley area
New build properties
If you've bought or moved into a new build property, it might not be registered on our system or have a Council Tax band assigned yet. Properties are banded by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), and you'll receive details of this when the property is banded.
You still need to complete the change of address form to register for Council Tax, so the address is added to our system. When the property has been banded, we'll issue and post a Council Tax bill to the charge payer.
Tell us a tenant has moved in or out
If you’re a landlord or letting agent and your tenant changes address, let us know by filling in our change of tenant form.
Tell us you've bought or sold a property you don't live in
You need to let us know if you're:
- Buying a property in the Barnsley area but not to live in it. For example, you're buying it for rental or investment purposes and will not move into it yourself.
- Selling a property that isn't your main home or address. For example, you're selling a property where you were responsible for paying Council Tax, but it wasn't your main home or the address where you lived.
Tell us you're now the only adult living in your home
If your partner or an adult you were living with moves out of your home, you can apply for a single person discount on your Council Tax bill.
Find out more and how to apply on our Council Tax discounts webpage.
Tell us someone has died
If anyone named on a Council Tax account has died, you need to tell us about this. Find out how to tell our Council Tax service about a death.
