Armed Forces Walkway

Our Armed Forces Walkway is a dedicated space to honour and remember the brave men and women who have served—and continue to serve—in our armed forces. This special area has been created with the support of Barnsley College.

Located on Westgate in the college gardens, the walkway offers a peaceful setting where families and friends can sit, reflect, and pay tribute to those who have given so much.

Anyone who has a connection to Barnsley can buy a stone or bench for the walkway. Stones can be bought at any time of the year. You'll need to provide proof of service.

Commemorative stones

Stones cost £350 and can be purchased on the National Veterans Walk website.

The content of the stones is limited to:

  • name, rank and service number (we can't accept nicknames)
  • emblem - we can include one official emblem to represent the unit served
  • name of unit

Orders received before Friday 20 March 2026 will form part of the unveiling ceremony which is scheduled for Friday 17 April 2026.

Commemorative benches

Commemorative benches are also available for purchase and cost the following:

  • £1,700 + VAT – includes leg engraving, 1 plaque, and poppies on each side leg
  • £1,500 + VAT – includes leg engraving and 1 plaque

Additional plaques can be added at a cost of £50 + VAT each.

For information on how to purchase a bench please contact armedforcescouncilqueries@barnsley.gov.uk.

Proof of service

Any personnel who have left the military since December 2018 will automatically be given an ID card. The card is designed to give you easier access to public and charitable support, including healthcare and housing, as well as providing retail discounts.

You can find out more about the veterans ID card at GOV.UK or get a copy of military service records.
