Mental health services
If you feel you need some support with your mental health, you should speak to your GP.
Your GP may refer you to an NHS mental health service called the Single Point of Access team. You may be offered an assessment, and short-term support or a referral to other mental health services.
If you need help for a mental health crisis or emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.
Self-referral
Barnsley Talking Therapies can help you get quick and easy access to the best type of aid for various mental health conditions. They can help you understand and learn to manage symptoms for things like anxiety, stress, low mood and depression.
Barnsley Talking Therapies can help with:
- anxiety (generalised, social or health)
- work-related stress
- depression
- body dysmorphic disorder
- panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia)
- obsessional compulsive disorder (OCD)
- single event trauma resulting in post traumatic stress
- phobias

Out-of-hours support
If you need support for your mental health outside of normal working hours you can:
- visit NHS 111 online or call 111
- call the 24-hour mental health helpline on 0800 183 0558
- call Samaritans on 116 123, or text to 07725 909090
- contact the Shout messaging support service - text Shout to 85258
There's also a mental health liaison team based at Barnsley Hospital. You need to attend A&E at the hospital to access this service.

There are many support services available locally and nationally that can offer mental health support.
Local support services
- 24-hour mental health helpline offers support and advice for your mental health by calling 0800 183 0558.
- Amparo offer support for anyone affected by suicide. Email amparo.service@listening-ear.co.uk or call 0330 088 9255.
- Andy’s Man Club run free sessions where men over 18 can come together and offer each other peer-to-peer support. Visit the Andy's Man Club Barnsley Facebook page for more information.
- Compass Be works with children, young people and families in education settings. They provide free and confidential mental health support and advice for pupils, students and schools.
- Creative Minds run projects to develop people's mental, physical and psychological wellbeing.
- Creative Recovery uses creativity to support mental health and recovery, boost wellbeing, build communities and bring about social change.
- Dad Matters Barnsley support dads to access services and information to help make sense of being a dad. They also support dads with anxiety, stress and mental health awareness.
- Exchange Recovery and Wellbeing College on Gawber Road, Barnsley offers a variety of informal courses that are run in small groups and are open to anyone.
- HumanKind provide mental health and wellbeing support, counselling, the opportunity to share and support others in group work programmes, as well as support from people that have been in a similar situation to you.
- Making Space is an independent organisation that supports carers and families of people having mental health issues.
- Mental Health Matters offer a free out-of-hours mental health crisis service for over 18s. Support is available virtually or in person, without the need for a referral or appointment.
- Mind is a national charity with a branch in Barnsley, for people having difficulties with their mental health. They offer counselling, support groups and help to get back into work.
- Samaritans of Barnsley offer a listening service as well as confidential support and advice about emotional wellbeing and mental health.
National support services
- NHS 111 offers mental health advice online or by calling 111 free from landlines and mobiles. The Every Mind Matters website also includes information about mental health issues and wellbeing tips.
- Op COURAGE is an NHS mental health and wellbeing service for armed forces veterans. It's designed to help serving personal due to leave the military, reservists, veterans and their families.
- Papyrus is a youth suicide prevention charity offering free 24-hour advice. Call 0800 068 4141 or text 07860 039967 for support.
- Rethink Mental Illness offers help on a wide range of topics such as the Mental Health Act, community care, welfare benefits, and carers rights, as well as general information about living with mental illness, medication and care.
- SANE is a national mental health charity offering an out-of-hours helpline (SANEline) for specialist emotional support, guidance and information to anyone affected by mental illness, including family, friends and carers.
- Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide is a national charity that provides support to adults who have been bereaved by suicide. Visit the website, email barnsley@uksobs.org or call 0300 111 5065.
- Togetherall is a unique mental health service offering an anonymous and safe support community, moderated by professionals and counsellors.
Mental Health Act referral line
A Mental Health Act assessment is a formal assessment to find out whether someone’s mental health treatment can be managed in the community. If not, a formal admission to hospital will be needed. To make a referral for a Mental Health Act assessment call 01226 772448.
