Importing and exporting animals

There is guidance about importing and exporting animals to and from the UK on GOV.UK.

Bringing your pet into the UK

If you want to import a pet from overseas that needs to be in quarantine, plan ahead and book your pet in early. Quarantine kennels and catteries can be very popular.

Talk to other pet owners and see which premises they recommend. You can also talk to other experts, such as vets and breeders. You should agree all costs in advance. The RSPCA can provide a list of quarantine kennels and catteries.

Visit the DEFRA website for guidance for bringing your pet dog or cat to Great Britain.

Exporting animals to overseas countries

Rules for the importing animals into overseas locations vary, depending on the country concerned. Before you move overseas, see the guidance on exporting live animals.
