Adult social care
Supported activities for people with learning disabilities
If you have a learning disability or autism, we offer a range of activities that can be tailored to meet your needs.
All of the activities aim to improve your skills, helping you do as much on your own as possible. They include things such as:
- working or volunteering
- learning to travel alone
- taking part in leisure and social activities
- improving your skills and knowledge
We'll work with you and your parents or carers to support you with the things you'd like to do. We offer a key worker scheme as well as your own support plan, to make sure we understand your needs.
Who we can support
We offer activities to suit people with:
- mild to moderate learning disabilities
- more complex learning or physical difficulties
People of all ages and with a range of disabilities can use our service. And we're always creating and developing community links to encourage more people to use our facilities.
Where activities take place
The groups and activities take place mainly in the local community. We also provide some groups and activities in our day centres in:
- Athersley South
- Dearne
- Gilroyd
- Wombwell
You'll need to travel to and from any group or activity you choose to attend, whether it's in your local community or at one of our day centres.
Types of activities
Our service users often tell us what kind of activities they want to get involved in. If possible we'll try to provide these, either in our day centres or by helping people to access what's already available in the community.
The type of activities we support with include:
- cookery
- day trips
- exercise classes and other leisure activities
- gardening
- managing your money
- sensory activities
- volunteering with local groups and businesses
- walking groups
The list is flexible and review what we offer, developing new activities to suit the needs and wishes of the people that join us.
You can mix and match services and support to meet your needs. For example, you might want to spend part of your week with us and the rest going to college. You could also use our supported employment and volunteering service and attend a placement on some days.
How to apply
You'll need to get a social care assessment to see if you qualify for the services we offer by calling 01226 773300.
You'll also need to have a financial assessment. This helps us to calculate if you'll need to pay towards the cost of your support. If you prefer not to have a financial assessment, you can pay the full daily rate yourself. Find out about paying for your care.
If you're eligible, we'll develop a package of support that's right for you. We can also include your parents, family, or carers.
