Taxi licensing fees and charges consultation 2025

Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, acting as the licensing authority, have reviewed its fees and charges for private hire drivers, vehicles and operators and hackney carriage drivers and vehicles.

The council is the licensing authority for the purpose of hackney carriage and private hire licensing. Its functions and responsibilities in relation to fees and charges for taxi and private hire licences are set out in section 53 and 70 of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976.

Section 70 of the Act permits the council to set vehicle and operator licence fees, but where this fee exceeds £25, under section 70(3) a public notice of the proposed fees must be published in a local newspaper circulating in the borough for not less than 28 days within which any objections to the proposals can be made. A copy of this notice shall for the same period, from the date of the first publication thereof, be deposited at the offices of the council, Westgate Plaza One, Westgate, Barnsley and shall at all reasonable hours be open to public inspection without payment.

This consultation will run for 28 days commencing on 18 April 2025 and finishing at midnight of 16 May 2025.

If no objections are received, the new fees and charges will come into effect at midnight on 16 May 2025. If objections are received, then the council must consider these and then make the decision to approve or amend the fees and charges accordingly.
